Why are taboos important?
As therapists, coaches, and educators, a lot of what we do involves asking the questions others wouldn't dare to ask, leading people in conversations that would otherwise be forbidden by rule and custom. Across three weekend sessions we will explore the topic of taboo, and key topics rife with taboos - death, sex, and money - in order to help our communities ask the questions they wouldn't dare to ask, but which are often the most important questions.
"Taboos are foundational rules that are imposed by society and religion. Massively pointed by restrictions, prohibitions, and forbiden-ness, taboos are distinguished from other rules by their focus on what is beyond public debate.
Taboos create norms and boundaries, therefore transgressing them is dangerous. They make up the social order, and discussing them has the potential to break that order - be they around food, who you marry, what you wear, who you get to have sex with, whether you can talk about money, or death with people who are dying.
A lot of what we do in therapy is have conversations about these topics that don't take place anywhere else - forbidden conversations."
