Sessions Live 2021: The Great Adaptation
How we can stay grounded when the ground is moving.
Sessions Live is Esther Perel's annual conference dedicated to therapists, coaches, and other professionals who help people navigate the complexities of modern relationships. We are so excited to present you with this year's topic. Across three Saturdays in November, Esther and her guests will combine didactic and experiential sessions on the following topics:
11.6 - The Adaptive Therapist
During this period of overlapping crises, both therapists and clients are experiencing parallel processes of prolonged uncertainty and collective grief. On day one of Sessions Live 2021, we will explore the evolving goals and limitations—as well as the shifting boundaries—of therapy now.
Guest Speakers: Marcelo Bronstein; Mary Jo Barrett, MSW
Discussant: Jeffrey Lawrence, PsyD
11.13 - Social Connection
Social connection, from supervision groups to virtual retreats, is the key to developing collective resilience. Through case studies, we will examine how therapists can best support each other while straddling anxiety and hopefulness—and how resourcing one another can also enhance the strategies we use to help our clients.
Guest Speakers: Alexandra Solomon, Ph.D; Judith Gibbons, Ph.D; Christina Curtis, MA, LMFT
Discussant: Malika Bhowmik Ph.D
11.20 - The Next Normal
From politics and the pandemic to racial trauma and climate despair, the world at large is a main character in the therapeutic narrative. On the final day of our conference, we will focus on re-envisioning how our work might evolve in the coming years.
Guest Speakers: Lisa Fortuna, MD, MPH, M.Div; Edith Shiro, PsyD
Discussant: Jordana Jacobs, Ph.D
How Can We Stay Grounded When The Ground Is Moving?
Eighteen months of prolonged uncertainty has been stressful to therapists and clients alike. Many of us are grappling with how to provide emotional support when we ourselves are feeling depleted. Sessions Live 2021 is an event where therapists, coaches, and mental health professionals come together to counteract the isolation and burnout that has intensified this year.
Across three Saturday sessions, we will address the goals, roles, and limitations of therapy in a time of collective trauma and overlapping large scale crises and explore how to support and resource each other.
"Adaptability is an essential part of resilience. It’s the conversation within you between stability and change. It’s the marriage of your fundamental needs for security and adventure.
Adaptability is the ability to bend and come back to center over and over again, increasing our flexibility each time, whether you're in your daily stretch or the fight for your life. And the more you practice becoming adaptable, the more you can tolerate change and harness its power.
To ensure that we can continue to do our work well, it’s crucial that we cultivate flexibility, nimbleness, and adaptability as key skills for meeting this moment. To remain stable emotional supports for our clients, we need to know how to bend without breaking."
